Green Remodeling

Green Remodeling is the design and construction of projects that reduce the environmental impact of remodeling, inlcuding energy, water, materials consumption, waste generation, and harmful emissions; both indoors and out. A Green Professional considers sustainability and maximizing nature's resources and energy in an efficient and responsible manner in the conduct of their business.

There are several aspects to green remodeling.

• Building Science is the study of the interaction between occupants, building components/systems, and environment; focusing on flows of heat, air, and moisture.
• Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is the healthfulness of an interior environment. IAQ is affected by such factors as moisture and mold, emissions of volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, radon, etc.
• Deconstruction vs. Demolition: Deconstruction is the process of disassembling buildings to generate a supply of materials suitable for reuse in other projects. Demolition means all materials will end up in the land fill. It is thought that 85-90% of construction disposal is recyclable. In the US, construction and demolition debris account for 20% of all landfill; 43% (58 miillion tons) of this is from residential construction, demolition, and renovation projects.
• Renewable Energy: Solar, WInd, Geothermal, and Biomass Energy.
• Energy Efficient Appliances (Energy Star Rated): Energy Star qualified appliances incorporate advanced technologies that use 10-50% less energy and water than standard models.
• Exterior Site Development (Landscape): Design to encourage outdoor activities, minimize outdoor water use, minimize heat island effects, protect the homes foundation from moisture, and to support a connection with nature. Landscaping can also be used to provide shade, reducing the home's cooling load.

Green Remodeling can and should be a part of every project. Every effort to provide a healthier, more energy efficient, and weather resistant home counts as being "GREEN." It can be as simple as changing out incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights. Going green is sometimes presumed to be expensive or a big under taking, but education and the changing of simple habits can reduce energy use and protect the environment without costing a penny.

The Home Perfomance with Energy Star Program

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy created the Energy Star rating system in 1992 to help us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

This program offers a comprehensive approach to home improvement, remodeling, and renovation that will make your home more efficient and reduce energy costs, while improving indoor air quality and creating a more comfortable, healthier home. At the same time, you'll help to protect the environment through energy conservation. As a certified contractor we are able to test the home with what is known as a Home Energy Analysis. With the results of the tests and inspection we will provide our customer with, a list of recommendations in order of what needs to be done; from the most significant in combination with what is most cost effective. This program also allows our customers certain opportunities for rebates from their utility companies.

When considering the most cost effectiveness of upgrading or making changes toward energy efficiency, consider human and environmental health. Allowing pollution through excess energy use has a price to be paid. This is the "responsiblity cost" of energy use. We have the responsibility to do what we can to limit our energy use. This program helps us as the general public fulfill that responsibility through energy saving products and practices.
