These emergency tips are used in the restoration industry and are intended to reduce the severity of collateral damage resulting from a loss in your property. They are not all inclusive in nature, and are not a substitute for professional services like Brackmann Construction. You must be careful any time your property has been damaged, looking for possible dangerous conditions such as ceiling or floor collapse.
FIRE AND SMOKE
DO:
- Limit the movement in the home to prevent spreading and embedding soot particles.
- Clean and protect chrome trim on kitchen appliances with a light coating of petroleum jelly or other oil.
- Clean and coat any metal, brass, or copper that may be restored with oil.
- Blow off or brush-vacuum loose soot and particles from upholstery, carpeting and drapes.
- Open windows to begin to air out the property.
- Wash plants with water.
- Change the furnace filter (if the furnace is operating).
- Empty the refrigerator or freezer (if electricity is off) and prop doors open.
- Pour antifreeze in the sinks, tubs, drains, and toilets if the heat is off during cold temperatures.
- Turn water off and drain water lines.
- Drain the heating system of a hot water furnace.
- Drain the hot water heater if the electric or gas is off.
DON’T:
- Do not attempt to clean or wash any absorbent surfaces i.e. walls, ceilings, etc.
- Do not use upholstered furniture.
- Do not use any food items that have been exposed to high heat or smoke.
- Do not use electronics until they have been professionally checked and cleaned.
WATER DAMAGE
DO:
- Remove as much water as you can with wet vacuuming or mopping.
- Wipe water from wood surfaces.
- Place plastic or aluminum foil between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
- Move oil paintings and other art objects to a dry place.
- Open drawers and doors of furniture and cupboards.
- In summer, turn on the air conditioning; in winter, open the windows. (This allows moisture to escape).
- Prop up or remove wet furniture cushions.
- Open boxes, luggage, etc. and place in sunlight if possible.
DON’T:
- Do not leave wet fabrics in place.
- Do not use any power equipment or electronics while standing in water, or while items are wet.
- Do not leave any colored items on carpeting.
- Do not use light fixtures if wet.
SOOT DAMAGE
DO:
- Blow off or vacuum soot from upholstery, drapes and carpeting.
- Cover upholstery before using.
- Cover the air registers with cheesecloth or other filtering material.
- Change the furnace filter.
DON’T:
- Do not try to clean walls or carpeting yourself.
VANDALISM
DO:
- Hose down or wash egg from building as soon as possible.
- Vacuum glass from carpeting and upholstery.
- Wipe up spilled food from carpets and fabrics with a damp cloth (be careful not to over wet). It is okay to blot and scrape (be careful not to rub).
- Save any containers to identify spilled inks, paints, cosmetics, or other chemicals.
DON’T:
- Do not attempt to remove any ink, cosmetics, or paints.
- Do not use lamps or appliances that may be damaged.
- Do not throw away anything that may provide evidence for criminal investigation or insurance claims.
